hi welcome to the metropolitan water reclamation district of greater chicago's virtual tour my name is justin brown i'm a public affairs specialist here and i'll be your tour guide today the metropolitan water reclamation district of greater chicago is a government agency responsible for treating wastewater and managing storm water for the chicago region so that means cleaning sewage and working to reduce flooding in the area even though we have the word water in our name one thing we're not responsible for is the region's water supply for most people in our service area their water comes from the city of chicago's department of water management we were founded in 1889 to reverse the flow of the chicago river and in a minute i'll show you how we did that and maybe more importantly why it was necessary to do that today we have seven wastewater treatment plants including our eagan plant in schaumburg where i am now we have hundreds of miles of sewers we have flood control and green infrastructure projects all across the county and we have a system of huge tunnels hundreds of feet underground that flow into gigantic reservoirs that are designed to protect our rivers from sewer overflows so i'm going to be showing you all that and more actually one of my other job duties here besides giving tours is shooting photos and video so
